We typically stage 1 or 2 observers on main dike road south of the refuge to count the many birds typically in the refuge. This fall cranes were not using the south end of the refuge and we didn't believe there were large numbers in the north end of the refuge - we were wrong. Unfortunately, many (2 or 3 thousand?) birds were not counted that flew south from the refuge in 2024.
